Zero-Friction Diner Ordering & Real-Time Kitchen Display UX.
OrderUp is a hospitality platform built for restaurants, cloud kitchens, and multi-brand venues. Designer Panda designed the entire mobile diner interface, customizable menu architecture, and high-visibility Kitchen Display System (KDS) β eliminating app downloads and shortening order times.
Eliminating friction between hungry diners and the kitchen line.
Independent restaurants and cloud kitchens were losing customer goodwill to heavy third-party marketplace apps that charged up to 30% commission and forced guests through tedious account signups. When diners were seated, they wanted to scan a QR code, view the menu immediately on their phone, customize their order, and pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay without downloading an application from the app store.
On the kitchen side, kitchen staff were handling orders in noisy, high-pressure environments where complicated interfaces led to missed modifiers, allergen mistakes, and delayed tickets.
From initial wireframes to tokenized Figma production handoff.
Designer Panda was engaged as the lead product design partner to architect the complete UX and UI for both sides of the platform:
- β¦Diner Web Experience: Responsive mobile browser flow for table ordering, allergen filtering, item modifiers, and one-tap checkout.
- β¦Kitchen Display System (KDS): High-contrast tablet and wall-mounted interface for kitchen line staff with audio cues and ticket status transitions.
- β¦Modular Multi-Tenant Theming: Brand styling architecture allowing each restaurant partner to apply their own logo, colors, and banner imagery.
- β¦Interactive Figma Prototyping: Fully interactive click-through prototypes used to validate ergonomics with actual restaurant staff.
Four deliberate UX decisions that shortened ordering times.
1. Zero-Install Mobile Browser Flow
Guests access the live menu immediately via mobile web QR routing. No app download, no account passwords, and native Apple Pay / Google Pay integration reduces checkout to under 90 seconds.
2. Prominent Allergen & Dietary Badges
Dietary indicators (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, halal, nut-free) are displayed directly on menu cards and filterable with one tap, preventing costly order remakes and safeguarding health.
3. High-Contrast Kitchen Display System
A dark-mode layout with bold typography, large tap buttons, and color-coded status timers (green under 5 mins, amber 5-12 mins, flashing red over 12 mins) legible from 6 feet away in steamy kitchen environments.
4. Rapid Modifier Tray Architecture
Instead of deep modal overlays, dish modifications (temperatures, sides, sauces) use horizontal chip groups and clear price increments, preventing modifier fatigue and accidental omissions.
What was delivered to the OrderUp engineering team.
Shipped directly into production with zero redesign cycles.
The OrderUp engineering team implemented the Figma specifications directly into their React production stack. The interface received praise from participating pilot venues for its intuitive ergonomics, clarity during rush periods, and fast customer adoption without staff training.
βOrderUp needed a design partner who understood product, not just visuals. Designer Panda delivered flows we actually shipped, untouched.β
